Designing an engaging, memorable exhibit isn’t simply about having a beautiful booth display.
It’s about tying all of the elements of your exhibit plan together to create one unified marketing message. Think of your booth as a three-dimensional ad brought to life.
It’s also your storefront for the duration of the show. That means you need to create a unique identity in a sea of other exhibits.
You only have a few seconds to capture your audience’s attention and convey your message. If it’s not crystal-clear, people will move on.
How can you do that? For this second article in the “Back to School” series, we’re going beyond basic booth design to focus on what comes before …
Understand your audience so you can design what will speak to them.
(This 5-part series corresponds to the sections in my book, Build a Better Trade Show Image. It’s the how-to guide I wish I had before my first exhibit, and exhibitors from around the world now consider it the essential handbook to improve their trade show results.)
Success Strategies for Small Exhibits
Having a small booth space doesn’t always mean less traffic.
I’ve witnessed memorable trade show moments (and traffic) from exhibitors who make clever use of a 10×10 booth. From storytelling in themed environments to more personal attention, connecting with the right people doesn’t necessarily require a huge staff or mega-budget.
Make it inviting, interactive, and all about your audience … instead of your company. In this episode, you’ll learn creative ideas to stand out before, during, and after the show – even with a modest footprint.
“It doesn’t matter how big or small your company is, how well known you are, or how much you spent to exhibit. What really matters is your strategy before & during the show that sets you up for success.”

They’re Just Not That Into You
Reality check: Most attendees aren’t coming to the show just see you, so simply being there isn’t enough.
You’ve got to meet attendees where they are. Show them solutions instead of boring them with a sales monologue. They want a message that feels like it’s just for them.
If your booth is all about how great your company or product is, rather than how it solves attendees’ problems, they’ll keep walking. Listen to this episode for ways to understand their pain and speak their language with authenticity and empathy.
“Attendees are seeking thought leadership, engaging content, and a customized experience.”
Tired of being overlooked?
Let’s flip the script to connect with your ideal attendees. (You can read this article here.)
Speaking the Attendees’ Language
Ever caught yourself using “corporate-speak” or too much “we” and “us” in your booth messaging?
It’s time for a message makeover! Forget jargon and complicated industry terms. Attendees want straightforward benefits and solutions that matter to them.
If a 10-year-old can’t figure out what you’re offering, you’re likely losing potential customers too! Use clear, attendee-centered messaging and teach your staff how to communicate human-to-human.
“Every time you set up a booth, you have to become fluent in the language of the attendees at that show.”

Understanding What Drives Attendee Behavior
What invisible force shapes the way people browse & buy at a show? Behavioral economics!
My interview with Melina Palmer reveals the psychology of attendee decision-making and shows just how much is based on habit and impulse, rather than conscious choice.
You’ll get hands-on advice like how to design an experience that feels welcoming (not overwhelming) and why even small moments of “surprise & delight” can make a big difference.
If you’ve ever wondered what makes attendees tick, behavioral science has answers.
“When you can lean into emotion and storytelling … that ties to memory and the experience.” ~ Melina Palmer

Don’t Make Me Squint!
Ever seen a booth with tiny or overly-fancy type in colors that make your eyes hurt to read?
The advice is clear (literally): go bold, basic, and make sure your message can be read from across the aisle. With a checklist for fonts, contrast, and clarity, this episode will help even non-designers create graphics that attract.
“Go for readable over quirky.”

Backstage Wisdom: Exhibit Marketing Lessons from Reality TV
Ever wondered what trade show marketers can learn from reality TV?
I invited Emmy Award-winning media strategist, Vinnie Potestivo to share surprising parallels between pitching breakthrough TV shows and marketing intangible services on the show floor.
Drawing from his decades of experience developing iconic TV franchises, Vinnie shares insider strategies on how to “be the experience,” frame your value in the language of your audience, and build relationships, not just transactions.
With rich stories from the world of MTV, you’ll learn what it takes to promote ideas internally & externally, inspire your team, and stand out as a true partner (not a pushy salesperson).
